What’s next for the EU Green Deal? EU Organic Farming
By Tom Carter, Senior Associate
The European Commission has initiated a public consultation on organic farming as part of their broader goal of implementing the many ambitious goals of the European Green Deal (EGD). The process of developing an organic farming action plan begins with a solicitation of public input by 23 October 2020. The resulting action plan will address two of the EGD’s multiple strategies: Farm to Fork and Biodiversity.
What’s new?
The EGD agricultural objectives for 2030 include:
Devoting 25% of EU agricultural land to organic farming
Increasing organic aquaculture significantly
The action plan will seek to achieve these targets by encouraging investment and innovation, increasing public education, and driving consumer demand for organic food.
How does this affect you?
The plan will involve coordination between consumers, farmers, business operators, national governments and local authorities and will include specific recommendations for nation-state legislation and for EU-wide agriculture policy.
