EC Consultation on Offshore Renewable Energy
By Tom Carter, Senior Associate
The European Commission has initiated another consultation to start the process of developing an extensive and coordinated suite of roadmaps to implement the objectives of the European Green Deal. The latest consultation addresses offshore renewable energy (ORE), with the first step being to gather public input on what should be included in a future strategy. The deadline for providing this initial feedback is August 13. The outcome of the consultation will feed into the EU ORE strategy to be presented before the end of the year.
Expanding the harnessing and utilization of renewable energy will be a critical tool achieving the ambition of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and buttressing the EU’s role as a world leader in clean energy technology and usage. The EU has established a target of increasing offshore wind energy production from the current 22 gigawatts (GW) to at least 240 GW in 2050 with an aspirational goal of 440 GW.
The ORE strategy also address harnessing renewable wave and tidal energy, floating photovoltaic energy, and offshore storage and conversion facilities. This strategy will be rolled out in the context of the post COVID-19 crisis recovery.
