European Union Trade Review
By Tom Carter, Senior Associate
The European Commission has begun the process of reviewing the EU’s trade policy in the context of dramatic global changes in the past few years. One key takeaway is that the EC intends to meld trade policy with the European Green Deal, the Digital Transformation, and COVID recovery. Another is that Europe is poised to step into the void created by the United States’ stepping back as a leader on global trade.
The process began in June with the release of a public consultation to encourage input from all sectors. Specifically, the EC is requesting information on:
Empowering trade policy to address climate change, sustainability, and the digital transition
Building a resilient and sustainable EU economy after the coronavirus
Creating global trade opportunities for businesses, particularly small enterprises
Reforming the World Trade Organization
Strengthening trade and investment relationships with key trading partners
Further leveling the playing field and protecting EU business and citizens
The consultation is open until September 15. For more information and directions for providing input, please visit the EC release here.
