European Commission releases Proposed European Climate Pact
By Tom Carter, Senior Associate
The European Commission this week released a proposed version of the European Climate Pact, a keystone of the European Green Deal.
The draft lays out an approach that combines distinct action items with education and communication strategies designed to elicit greenhouse gas reduction commitments from member states, municipalities, corporations, academic institutions, and individuals.
The initial wave of proposed actions includes:
Ensuring that new construction builds energy efficient structures
Working with cities to enhance the sustainability of urban mobility systems
Increasing green space in cities and elsewhere through tree planting and nature regeneration.
The Commission simultaneously released a consultation plan to enable public input on the details of the proposed Pact and future climate policies.
The Commission points out that consultations provide opportunities for interested stakeholders to ‘co-design’ future EU policy, share information, launch grassroots activities and showcase solutions that others can follow.
The online public consultation is open until 27 May 2020.
